Plasma Televisions
Let us face it: it is hard to be pitching a new advertisement concept to a whole bunch of top honchos in your client’s company. More so when you’re the poor bloke who has to find a large enough plasma television to illustrate your concept!
Why a plasma television? I go only by what I know – and I rather know very little. And it was a demand of my immediate superior, our Creative Director. So I went to the nearest electrical appliance shop near my advertising agency and chatted with the salesman there on the merits and demerits of plasma television.
The salesman was a kindly and portly gentleman. He explained to me that plasma television would be a good choice for our presentation, mainly because of several points:
• Plasma television had better color contrast and color accuracy. This was very important to any advertising concept presentation. Since our new ad concept was very “revolutionary and avant garde”, we needed a television that could capture the very colors of what the ad would look like in its conceptual board.
• Plasma television sets had better performance in motion tracking, with hardly any time lag involved. Okay, so we’re not getting hooked up onto the internet or broadcasting any current TV program during the pitch. But we had a short presentation of a movie clip with fast sports action involved. So we wanted that to look pretty exciting in our presentation.
• And the best feature of plasma television for me was – it had larger format choices. I needed one that was 60 inch in size so we could have a really life-like and impressive presentation.

But the portly salesman also said that plasma television had also some disadvantages. It tended to overheat more than LCD television sets. Plasma television sets are made up of miniature fluorescent lights which come in three colors – red, green and blue. These lights get illuminated and when they do, the plasma gas inside the fluorescent light of course gets illuminated.
Another disadvantage was that the display monitor has a shorter life span than LCD because of all that lighting up.
Nevertheless, the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. So I ended up buying the biggest plasma television there – about 60 inches. And my presentation was a smashing one!
